The plant is located in the Vancouver harbour just east of the North Shore approach to the Second Narrows Bridge. There are two other chemical plants in the area, Erco Worldwide, which is a supplier of chlorate chemicals to the forest industry, and Newalta, which recycles oil products. Other industrial neighbours include a waste transfer station, BA Blacktop, Allied Shipbuilders and two concrete plants, Ocean Cement and Rempel Bros. Since the plant was built in 1957 it has played an important role in British Columbia's economy. Canexus is a key supplier of chemicals that are used to purify municipal drinking water, including the Greater Vancouver Regional District water supply. Nearly two-thirds of the chlorine produced at the plant is used to treat drinking water or is repackaged for use in swimming pools and other applications where pure water is required. B.C.'s forest industry also relies on products produced at the plant. In fact, 84 percent of the plant's production of caustic soda is used in the province's pulp and paper industry. The raw materials used in the manufacturing process are common salt and water.
Canexus takes pride in its commitment to world-class safe operating procedures. During the 53 year history of operating as a chemical plant, there has never been a serious incident. The plant is ISO9001 – 2008 certified, having met the exacting standards of the International Standards Organization. We were one of the first companies to successfully complete the verification process for Responsible Care certification, a national ethics and safety program that was launched by the chemical industry in 1985. We also work hard to communicate with our neighbours. To create a community sounding board for plant decisions and community concerns, our company, together with ERCO Worldwide, Univar Canada and the North Shore Emergency Management Office sponsors a Community Advisory Panel (CAP) that meets on a regular basis to discuss issues involving the chemical industry and the Port Metro Vancouver's industrial community on the North Shore. Our staff regularly conducts training sessions for Lower Mainland fire departments in handling emergency situations involving chemicals. We are also a member of the North Vancouver Waterfront Industrial Association. In addition, we helped sponsor the recent Maplewood charette which involved the community and local industry in examining potential opportunities for the future of the local area. Canexus was the founding force behind the North Shore's community alert system and continues to provide financial support for its operation. In 2010 Canexus made the largest donation in our company history of $1.2 MM to the construction of an all-weather artificial turf field at the Windsor High School location in North Vancouver. Canexus financial support for this project is very fitting for three (3) reasons. First - To celebrate our long history as a business member of the District of North Vancouver, providing jobs and taxes to support the local economy. Second – To recognize the major modernization project completed at our North Vancouver facility - which will ensure our continued place in the local industrial community for the next two (2) decades. And third – and not the least, is that support for this project is consistent with Canexus' commitment to the Responsible Care ethic. Responsible Care embodies our commitment to the local community not just to operate our facilities in a safe manner – one in which we exceed the letter and spirit of the law, but also to seek out and understand community stakeholders and continuously improve our engagement within the communities in which we operate.
