The Project

In 2005 Canexus announced that it was considering a major technology conversion project to modernize its North Shore plant.

There were key business driving forces for this decision. Customers were increasingly asking for a lower-cost, better quality product which can only be produced using the new membrane technology. With implementation of the Project in 2010, the plant is now better able to compete on price as the manufacturing cost has been reduced significantly. At the same time, the plant now has additional production capacity to meet increased market demand for its products.

Environmental Benefits

There are significant environmental benefits to this technology conversion. We have achieved our goal of phasing out the use of asbestos to make diaphragms for our cells. As well, the new membrane technology requires much less energy than our previous process and we are able to satisfy almost all of our steam requirements by firing byproduct hydrogen in our boiler to make steam without needing to purchase a large volume of supplemental natural gas. Consequently, greenhouse gas emissions have been reduced by well over 80 percent.

Timing

The Technology Conversion Project at the North Shore plant commenced in January 2008, was mechanically completed and converted during Q2 of 2010, and started up in Q3 of 2010.

Economic Impact

We made a $280 million investment in the future of this manufacturing plant, along with a clear vote of confidence in the growing economy of British Columbia and in the highly-skilled workforce at this location.
